BWEA Cymru 08

Wednesday 9 July 2008, St. David's Hotel, Cardiff

The second BWEA Cymru annual conference was held at the St David’s Hotel in Cardiff on July 9th and proved to be a major success. Over 250 delegates attended the conference where Jane Davidson, the Minister for Environment, Sustainability and Housing opened the conference with an uplifting and confident speech that aimed to reassure the industry that she is serious about achieving the Welsh Assembly renewable energy targets. She was immediately followed by veteran broadcaster Vincent Kane who reminded conference of the opportunities that awaits the industry and for the need for the entire nation to support and benefit from the renewable energy revolution.

Speakers throughout the day concentrated on the gear change that would be required to achieve the ambitious targets set out in the Welsh Assembly Government’s Renewable Energy Route Map.  One session looked at the issue of cumulative impacts in Strategic Search Areas which is rising to the top of the agenda. Another focused on the grid network in mid Wales to seek ways of transporting renewable electricity from that area. For the last session a six member panel debate chaired by presenter and broadcaster Sarah Dickins took place with delegates getting a chance to get stuck in on a wide ranging set of issues. The conference programme can be viewed here.

BWEA Cymru would like to thank all those who attended this year’s conference. With its success it is almost certain that the BWEA Cymru conference will become a permanent feature on the Welsh renewable energy calendar. The date and venue for BWEA Cymru 09 will be announced shortly.
