The Path to PowerDelivering confidence in Britain's wave and tidal stream industryJune 2006Click here to see the press release on the launch of this work. Wave and tidal stream energy has the potential to deliver a substantial, secure and renewable source of power for the UK and offers the UK the chance to create a world-class domestic industry developing, manufacturing and installing devices for an emerging global Market. The industry is now at a critical stage of development. It faces a number of hurdles that must be overcome for its potential to be realized. In response BWEA initiated a project, funded by npower juice, to identify the hurdles faced by the industry and to map out a Path to Power. For the first time the various strands of support required to ensure this country maximizes the economic and environmental opportunities available have been brought together into one document, resulting in the creation of a number of key recommendations for action. Over 100 interviews have been conducted on the issues of consenting, grid access and financial support requirements, making it the largest study of its kind ever completed for this sector. These have been carried out and reported upon by leading experts in their respective fields. The Path to Power final report was the last of fours stages, each of which involved a process of interviews, analysis and assessment. These stages were designed to address the pertinent issues in a timely manner, allowing results to build upon each other while ensuring developments outside the work could be accommodated. Indeed as well as the three technical documents outlined below, the final report draws upon the work of the Carbon Trusts Marine Energy Challenge (published January 2006) and various Government policy documents on the development of wave and tidal stream energy around the UK. BWEA would like to thank the npower juice fund for sponsoring this work, the interviewees for giving so freely of their time and frankly of their views, and the steering group for their time in providing valuable insights throughout the study. The following four stages make up the Path to Power (click to download in PDF format):
These documents provide a significant amount of targeted information on wave and tidal stream energy development around the UK. This will help inform decision making amongst marine stakeholders, investors, Government departments and the industry itself. Their purpose is to ensure marine renewables can expand as smoothly as possible through open channels of communication between all bodies interested and involved in harnessing the potential within this huge source of carbon free energy.
