UK Offshore Wind 2006
4-5 April 2006
Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre, Westminster
340 senior figures from the UK renewables industry gathered at the Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre in Westminster 4-5 April 2006, to attend BWEA's fifth annual offshore wind conference.
Conference Programme
UK Energy Minister Malcolm Wicks MP addressed the UK offshore wind industry at BWEA's conference, speaking in the opening session alongside Sir David King, Chief Scientific Adviser to HM Government, Anders Søe-Jensen, President of Vestas Offshore A/S and Chris Huhne MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Secretary of State for Environment and Rural Affairs.
Stephen Sackur, journalist and presenter, chaired a lively debate on the Energy Review, with panelists Tom Burke (E3G), Professor Ian Fells (Fells Associates & Founding Chair of NaREC), Tony Grayling (IPPR) and Clive Bates (The Environment Agency).
The conference took place at an important time, in the middle of the Government's Energy Review. Given the importance of offshore wind in delivering our 2020 energy objectives, helping to strengthen the nation's energy security and helping to meet our carbon commitments, UK Offshore Wind 2006 is considered to be one of the key energy events of the year.
The conference examined the key issues facing the offshore wind industry over the coming years. Though challenging, the rewards for the UK of successfully developing our huge offshore wind resource will be massive, and will include opportunities for exports of the technologies and expertise that taking an early lead in the sector will bring. It is also clear that offshore wind has the benefit of being a secure, indigenous, zero-carbon electricity source that can begin building at a large scale in the next five years. No other power source can promise this.
