BWEA Press ReleaseSunday 28 August 2005Thousands put their hands up in support of wind energyThousands of people used their Bank Holiday weekend to find out about wind energy as 15 wind farms across the UK opened to the public for the first ever Wind Weekend, a nationwide celebration of wind energy. People of all ages experienced the power of wind by touching and climbing turbines, touring wind farms, playing with windmills, making and flying kites and flags. Juliet Davenport, Chief Executive of Good Energy which opened it's Delabole wind farm in Cornwall commented: "So many people have not had the opportunity to visit a wind farm and experience what they are really like. With many varying opinions it is really important that people have the chance to get close, touch a turbine and learn the facts about renewable electricity. Wind Weekend has been a great initiative." Marcus Rand, CEO of British Wind Energy Association said: "Wind Weekend has provided a real chance to bust myths about wind energy while having fun at the same time. The fact that so many people turned up shows they are taking climate change seriously and see wind as a real and working solution." Wind Weekend was organised by Embrace the Revolution, the national campaign run by BWEA in support of wind energy. The success of the weekend provides support for NOP research showing that 77% of the UK population agree that wind farms are necessary to help meet current and future energy needs in the UK.
