BWEA News09 August 2005Latest poll finds strong support for renewables over nuclearThe majority of the public support renewables such as wind energy over building new nuclear power stations, a new survey by Populus has found. The survey, conducted for the The Times, found that 59% of those questioned believe that it would be irresponsible to build more nuclear power stations while problems remain in disposing of nuclear waste. Approximately 50% of respondents go so far as to say that they believe nuclear power to be unsafe, while only 1% of respondents said they thought ministers or MPs would tell the truth about the safety of nuclear plants. 79% of those polled back renewables such as wind power as a replacement for imported energy, while just 18% believe that nuclear power should replace imports. Populus interviewed 1,000 adults across Britain over the past four weeks and questioned each of them on their perception of nuclear power in the UK.
