BWEA welcomes Energy Minister's focus on renewablesin his first speech

Responding to Energy Minister Malcolm Wicks, MP who today re-affirmssupport for renewables in his first speech, Marcus Rand, BWEA Chief Executive said:

"We are delighted that the Energy Minister has chosen to highlight the importance of wind and renewables in his first major speech and stress the government's determination to reach our 10% by 2010 target. Renewables are key to meeting our Kyoto commitments so ensuring we achieve our goals on renewables is an absolute must.

Renewables are central to the UK's future energy supply as they offer secure, carbon free power available for use on our doorstep. Wind energy, as the Sustainable Development Commission pointed out last week, is the most technically and economically mature renewable technology available today and will contribute the bulk of the 10% by 2010 renewable target.

Exciting emerging technologies, such as wave and tidal power are critically important too, as they afford us the opportunity to provide competitive power after 2010.Today's announcement to provide additional funding to tidal power is much welcomed."
