Marine Renewable Energy

Over 300 delegates will attend BWEA Marine 08, sponsored by SeaRoc. The event, which is the world's largest dedicated wave and tidal stream energy conference, will be held at the EICC in Edinburgh on Thursday 28 February 2008, and will address key issues affecting the development of wave and tidal stream energy in the UK. Following from the huge popularity of 'Why Wind?' BWEA has produced a similar booklet intended to raise awareness of wave and tidal stream energy development around the UK. (Click on the image to download in PDF format)

'Why Marine?' has been designed as an educational tool looking at some of the technologies available today and how multiple device projects may evolve off our coast. It also addresses the opportunities of creating a new low-carbon industry around marine renewables and some of the considerations that have to be taken into account in doing this.

This booklet has been endorsed by both the Energy Minister Malcolm Wicks and Sir Jonathon Porritt, Chairman of the UK's Sustainable Development Commission, as well as our CEO, Maria McCaffery.

As Jonathon Porritt states in his foreword:

"There is a new industry in the making here, potentially creating thousands of jobs, generating a lot of new wealth, and delivering significant amounts of an increasingly precious commodity – namely, very low-carbon, environmentally friendly energy.

Not to seize hold of this opportunity with vigour and urgency would be insane".

I hope you find it a useful introduction to this exciting sector.
