Skills Summit

The Skills Summit is the first of its kind. At BWEA31, BWEA brought together over 30 senior representatives from business, skills bodies, government, academia and other stakeholder organisations to develop a training and skills route-map through the drafting of two Sector Skills Accords.

Building on the past collaborative work of BWEA and its key stakeholders relating to skills and education issues, delegates formalized their future commitments to further such work through the signing of two Sector Skills Accords at the Summit.

Full details of the background and proceedings of the event are included in the BWEA31 Skills Summit Guide.

The focal point for the Skills Summit was the sign off of the UK’s first Sector Skills Accords. Each wind and marine energy sector Skills Accord sets out the commitments of specific stakeholder groups to ensuring that a specific skills issue is systematically addressed. The Accords are not intended to be legally-binding documents but represent the intention of their supporters to ensure that the future skills needs of the wind and marine energy industries will be met.

Signatories of the Renewable Energy Careers and STEM Guidance Accord accept that time and resources should be invested in:

  1. School and educational outreach initiatives;
  2. Boosting the uptake of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Subjects across Education; and
  3. Providing clearer careers guidance on the pathways into the renewable energy industries.

Signatories of the Renewable Energy Apprenticeships Programme Accord accept that time and resources should be invested in:

  1. The continued development of wind and marine energy industry specific National Occupational Standards and qualifications;
  2. The design and delivery of a large scale wind energy service technician apprenticeship programme from 2010 and beyond;
  3. The design and delivery of a broader Renewable Energy Apprenticeship Programme for the future; and
  4. Making a commitment to the health, safety and wellbeing of everyone training and working in the industry.

Who developed the content of the Sector Skills Accords?

The draft form of the two Skills Accords that were presented at the BWEA31 Skills Summit had been developed through months of stakeholder consultation. The content of the Sector Skills Accords were finalised through the inputs of the senior stakeholder representatives attending.

Further signatories can join up to the Accord after the 21 st of October to support the initiatives that the Accords set out. If you wish to formally support either of the Skills Accords please contact f.kemenes@renewable-uk.com.
