AviationWorking Group for Wind Energy, Defence and Civil Aviation InterestsA DTI-led initiative, the 'Aviation Working Group' as it is commonly known, was formed in early 2001 to review the issues surrounding wind energy development and civil and military Aviation zones. Work is ongoing through this group, comprising a cross-section of stakeholders, including representatives from BWEA on behalf of the wind energy industry, the Ministry of Defence, the Department of Trade and Industry, National Air Traffic Services and the Civil Aviation Authority. Three studies have been commissioned:
The first of the studies has now been published. Wind Turbines and Aviation Interests - European Experience and Practice is available to download now. The document provides a clear source of information for wind farm developers on the potential impact of wind farms on both civil and military Aviation. This includes military low flying and the effect of wind turbines on radar functioning. Ongoing technical and non-technical research will feed into a revision of the Guidelines in 2003.
