How is RenewableUK Organised?

The Association is governed by a Board of Directors, elected from the membership by the membership by a single transferable vote system. Up to fourteen Directors (twelve elected and 2 co-opted) are appointed to represent the membership at large. The Board elects its own chairman, and each Board member accepts responsibility for a nominal area of the Association's activity. This ensures that the burden of work is shared evenly across the Board and that the CEO and staff have points of contact for details of the Association's activities. This also acts as a check and balance system for some of the more technical aspects of the Association's work.

The Association is located in Victoria, and has roughly 40 staff. It also uses various consultants and advisors where specialist knowledge is required. From time to time special interest groups will form, usually related to current issues, and these will be coordinated by a member of staff who will arrange e-mail correspondence or physical meetings as necessary. On all issues there will be at least one Board member involved to ensure continuity and consistency of Association policy.

The Association's primary activities are in promoting the use of wind power in and around the UK, both onshore and offshore. RenewableUK also champions the emerging wave and tidal energy industry, and the Association has close links with other renewable technologies and sibling organisations in other territories. The Association works closely with the EWEA on matters of European policy and has 3 directors of this body. EWEA concentrates on European policy matters, i.e. originating in Brussels, and also promotes wind energy in other territories which may be of interest to member companies.

RenewableUK significantly funds the Scottish Renewables Forum (SRF), which is our preferred avenue for lobbying in Scotland. Although energy is not devolved to Scotland, there are national and institutional issues which warrant working closely with SRF, representing all renewables in Scotland. This arrangement has been in place for 2 years and works very well. RenewableUK's CEO and an additional board member sit on the board of SRF.
