BWEA's 27th annual conference and exhibition
800 energy professionals gathered in Cardiff at the British Wind Energy Association's 27th annual conference and exhibition 18-20 October, and heard the news that 2005 has been a record year for the UK wind industry. Nineteen new wind farms of 500MW capacity are set to be commissioned this year, including the UK's largest offshore wind farm of 90MW at Kentish Flats. This new wind power capacity will provide carbon free power for the equivalent of 300,000 homes or every home in the city of Cardiff. Delegates at the conference were further encouraged by a major statement of intent on renewable energy from Malcolm Wicks MP, Minister of State for Energy, in his keynote address. The Minister announced consent for Little Cheyne Court Wind Farm on Romney Marsh in Kent, following a public inquiry earlier this year. The Minister also announced the publication of new research into investor attitudes to renewables, saying that it "shows continuing confidence in the renewable sector and in the Government's commitment to it. I want to leave the industry in no doubt today that this commitment is real and for the long term." Commenting on the Minister's speech Marcus Rand, Chief Executive of BWEA, said "This announcement is a further strong sign of this government's commitment to drive forward the development of wind energy in the UK. Wind has a key role to play in our energy future". Also, according to BWEA, the latest in the NOP Wind Tracker surveys shows that 80 per cent of the public believe that wind farms are necessary to help meet current and future energy needs in the UK. Wind's role in helping to meet the UK's short to long term climate targets is crucial, they believe, given the huge resource and the maturity of the technology. ConferenceOver 80 speakers presented in the main plenary sessions and technical sessions covering onshore and offshore wind along with wave and tidal energy issues. Topics included delivering the wind energy target in Wales, finance & the RO, development considerations, grid, project delivery, health & safety, technical issues, the regions, supply chain, small wind systems, aviation & MOD and delivering the message. The full conference programme can be viewed online here. Proceedings will be posted to all conference delegates approximately 2-3 weeks after the event and will be available for others to purchase. ExhibitionMore than 80 companies exhibited at BWEA27. A full exhibitor list can be found here. ExtrasFor information about the Gala Dinner and more, please visit the Extras page.
